Apparently, People Don’t Steal As Much Porn in Utah

s640x480A study by a Harvard Business School professor shows that Utah outpaces the more conservative states — which all tend to purchase more Internet porn than other states.

Online porn subscription rates are higher in states that enacted conservative legislation banning same-sex marriage or civil unions and where surveys show support for conservative positions on religion, gender roles and sexuality, according to an analysis published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives. [...]

Utah has the nation’s highest online porn subscription rate per thousand home broadband users, at 5.47, while the nearby states of Idaho and Montana showed the lowest rates of 1.98 and 1.92, respectively, according to the study.

I’ve been spending too much time appreciating photography, part 1

New York-based photographer Alison Brady creates images that are mysterious and sometimes overtly violent. Her mostly female subjects look like victims of the  beauty ideal, but whether they’ve sacrificed themselves at the altar of pop culture’s idolization of feminine perfection or if they’ve been been attacked through the result of their own vanity is unclear.

brady11

Her photographs all have a totally unnerving context of stillness: there was violence, there is about to be violence, but each time we are in the eye of the storm. The effects and impact are obvious, but help isn’t yet on the way… or perhaps never will be.

Like Hitchcock, Brady understands that the greatest fear lies in the subtle unseen. That the human imagination, given a hint, will conjure storylines far more disturbing than any picture can capture. In many of her images we only see the legs, dangling, prostrate, filthy. The upper half, the face, the expression, is hidden: in sand, in the ceiling, in the refrigerator. What has happened or how they’ve come to lie there is unknown to us. That visual curiosity, that we’re seeing the conclusion but never the beginning, is the most disturbingly eerie half-knowledge of all.

Who’s REALLY in Charge Around Here?

dick31Finally received my first DMCA takedown notice since moving to the new server.  Clearly, I won’t be doing fuck-all about it.  The post they asked to be removed didn’t even contain valid mp3 links.  The interesting part?  It was a post making fun of Dick Cheney shooting his friend with a shotgun.

Now…  how does Mr. Cheney still have the power and influence to do such things?  Or is it just a matter of him having so much freetime now that he can spend all day googling his name?

The Diablo Cody Backlash Backlash

I’ll admit it:  The dialogue in Juno bugged the shit out of me.   As much as I liked Diablo Cody before that, the movie pretty much ruined it for me.  I’m all for big successes (and proud of Ms. Cody for hers) but it just plain rubbed me the wrong way.  The Diabloness of the script was at 11….  and 10 is more than enough, thank you very much.

Yet, her new series is….  amazing.  The family is incredibly charming, the script is incredibly charming, the multiple personalities are incredibly charming, and Toni Collette is going to win a shit-ton of awards.

If you, like me, were firmly entrenched in the Diablo Cody backlash….

How many songs you record in your life?
Christ, over a million.

Seriously?
Quite sure. I been recording since I was 11. That’s the difference. Not writing, but recording and rapping for people. Baby and them had me in the studio since I was 11. My first album came out when I was 12. Over a million, yeah.

The Death of a Dear Friend, RIP The Mischke Broadcast: 1992 – 2008

The Mischke Poem

I can’t think of many people that I’ve spent more cumulative time with in my entire life than TD Mischke.  Though I only, briefly, met him 3 times …  I always felt as if the time we spent together (Me, listener…. Tommy, broadcaster) was more of a two way street than was ever possible.  As a teenager I’d listen to him before I went to bed….  then he become a staple of evenings… and later, my constant podcasting co-pilot during a long commute.

Perhaps it’s the right time to call the guy up, meet him for a hundred Summits at the Dubliner, and finally tell him that long, seemingly fabricated story about me and the city of Milwaukee (and the government agencies it involved) that took place in the fall of 2001.

Tommy, thanks for everything.  I look forward to hearing you wherever you land.
