The Bright Lights of Denver (pt. 1)

I have just returned from a much needed vacation.  It was wonderful – I got to drive hours and hours through the mountains, go fishing, hike, see the Grand Canyon again, and drink a lot.  The best part of the trip?  A 5 hour compilation of Colorado/Trucking songs I made for my drive from Denver to Crested Butte.  Not all of them are necessarily Colorado songs or Trucking songs, but the majority of them are.

Some of you may know that I like Townes Van Zandt a lot, but some of you may not know that he also lived in Crested Butte for a while, which is why is is especially over-represented in this mix.

Careful, this mix is over-countrified.  It fits when half of a town’s population is made up of transient Texans.

 Oh yes, it was glorious:

I am practicing my bad-assedness.

Special thanks to Joe, who made the original "Joe’s Truckin’ Mix," of which this compilation is built on.

I have purposely left out a ton of tracks – hopefully I will get around to posting them at some point*
**Hopefully there will be a follow-up with a more serious mix of road-tripping songs**
***Stay tuned for the Chronology of See That My Grave Is Kept Clean later this week, as well as a new "Seven Steps!"***

Also, there may be a prize if anyone can guess [ EDIT ] *5*of the 25 songs my girlfriend made me include!  Leave it in the comments section with your email address.  I will pick the winner by Tuesday of next week, July 3rd.  Rob is also a contestant.

UPDATE: The prize I have decided to give is Regard The End by the Willard Grant Conspiracy.  Even if you don’t like them, you should definitely jump on this, because it costs about $25 to buy new, as it is pretty much only sold in Europe, where it retails for 15 Euros.  DAMN I’m generous.

Do it.  Do it.  Do it.

Headwear

Headphones

The other day I walked into Starbucks (I’ve finagled my way into never paying for anything), took off my headphones and hooked them on the strap of my bookbag. “Wow, those are some pretty serious headphones. What are they, from 1980 or something?” No, they aren’t, and you’re an asshole.

Let’s backtrack. I have always been of the opinion that people are too easily sold things. I’m certainly guilty of this, but I do my research and still end up getting what I want, even if it is slightly more than I need. The part of the “getting sold” thing that bothers me the most is that after someone is sold something (but they got a really good deal) they feel like they have some sort of loyalty to the place that sold it to them. Case in point, Apple. For some reason the entire world thinks Apple’s in-ear earphones are the shit. It should be obvious after 5 seconds that they sound like ass, are uncomfortable, and the ultra high treble will probably cause brain damage. $30.00 is far too much. Maybe it’s all part of Apple’s marketing scheme. “It’s easier to sell to brain-damaged consumers.” Therefore, for most people, anything slightly larger than the Apple earphones must be “from 1980″ or “crap.”

Now, I’ve had a fairly long genesis with headphones. I’ve gone through several pairs of Apple earphones. They always break, and never have lasted longer than 6 months. To the people that say, “well, obviously you had the old version of the earphones,” – No, I’ve tried both. The old ones sucked really bad, the new ones are only slightly better. Before that I used to have a pair of decent Sony headphones. They sat right on top of my ears, crushing them into my skull. The only saving grace is that they did sound halfway decent. In the end, I was able to destroy them, but not until after giving me a few good years of listening.

Recently I was given a nice pair of Sennheisers for my birthday, and I love them. They are huge, over-the-ear headphones. I look like a dork. They sound AWESOME. Apparently they look like they’re from 1980.

So – No, my headphones are not from 1980. My headphones can kick your earphones’ ass. And, to anyone who is still using in-ear earphones – just go down to the store and test out a pair of big-ass over-ear headphones. They will rock your socks off.

Stu and the Void

Decline of Europe, Genia Chef

“Gazing at the faces of the horses and the people, at this boundless stream of life raised up by the power of my will and now hurtling into nowhere across the sunset-crimson steppe, I often think: where am I in this flux?”
-Ghengis Khan

Rob’s post last week (the one where he called me “brilliant”) was also quite memorable. It prompted me to go out and buy every Handsome Family CD I could get my hands on. I’ve listened to them pretty much non-stop. Their music puts me in a sour mood, and I like it. This addition to my music collection can be described with one word – progress.

So: the monster moves on. The blog posts pile up, and is there anything to show for it? Have we unveiled the monster’s true nature, or will progress itself succumb to the Clay Machine-gun and the virtue of Buddha’s Little Finger?

Death Cab For Cutie – This Temporary Life
Townes Van Zandt – Nothin’
Jeff Buckley – Eternal Life
Tim Buckley – Once I Was
Bonnie “Prince” Billie – Strange Form of Life
Jerry Jeff Walker – Song For The Life
Hank Williams – I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive
Lyle Lovett – Highway Kind (Townes cover, again)
The Highwaymen – Highway man (Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash)
Pink Floyd – Scream Thy Last Scream (oh yeah, super f-ed up)

I hate you, noodle dancer.

Dear Hippy,

I would hate to disturb your dancing, but please stop. You’re making me nauseous.

You’re in your element. I understand. I’m also in my element. See the head twitch, the foot tap? Thats my thing. No need to dance like a noodle. I’ve got it all under control.

There was a time when I might have been considered a hippy. I had a 6 year old tie-died Bob Dylan shirt that I bought from some dude in a parking lot. It was awesome. The concert was awesome too – BR549, Ani Difranco, Bob Dylan. Yeah, aside from BR549, it was pretty hippy. You know what I didn’t do at the concert? Hippy dance. Even at the Winnipeg Folk Fest – too drunk to stand, but not drunk enough to hippy dance.

Cut it out. Dig the groove, tap your fingers on a beer bottle, drum on the bar, learn a real dance. Get a dancing partner. And God help you if you ever shout out “PLAY STAIRWAY TO FREEBIRD.” I might strangle you right there.

Don’t do it for me. Do it for yourself. Please stop.

Thanks, Stu!

presidential.jpg

So this is it. The new site. Plenty of room for us all to hang out without wrinkling our shit. Trees Lounge is dead, long live Aural Fitness. The entire idea inspired by a really cool graphic that my good buddy Stu sent me. Similar to myself, he may have too much free time at work.

I’m going to do my best to keep you kids updated with the latest music, videos, and other interesting things that I find. I’ll make a formal announcement to my real friends in the next few days when the content begins to appear. Until then I’ll be at home trying to get my Vista box uncrashed!

We drink Jim Beam. RSS Feed.
